Article 8 of the United Nations Charter: stipulates that "the United Nations shall place no restrictions on the eligibility of men and women to participate in any capacity and under conditions of equality in its principal and subsidiary organs."

OSAGI, the Office of the Special Adviser on Gender Issues and Advancement of Women, is one of the best resources on gender mainstreaming at the UN. It provides a regularly updated, very complete section on gender balance statistics and many other UN documents relating to gender issues.

UNIFEM has done extensive work on gender mainstreaming within the UN.
